Located on Lycabettus Hill in Athens, the Lycabettus Theatre sits
within an old quarry scar, its light steel structure contrasting with
the rough rock. Beside it, a large parking area was formed by
filling part of the quarry with concrete. While Lycabettus Hill is
one of Athens’ few green spaces, the theatre area is defined
by the quarry’s remnants. It holds great potential as a public
meeting place but lacks services and definition. This project
creates an entrance and services for the theatre while subtly
organizing the parking lot. Cast into the quarry’s crevices, it forms
a monolithic structure that follows the hill’s curvature, blending
into the landscape. Spaces are carved into the rock, showcasing
the excavated stone and giving the theatre a presence without
overpowering its site.
